European Parliament visit:

The visit by Ville Niinistö was very exicting. Our team originally thought that the topics going to be covered were going to be enigmatic to understand, however it was quite simple it follow. Although there was a prolific amount of knowledge shared with us, our team found it most notable to talk about the work of the European Parliament and the work of an MEP.

We learned about the responsibility and work ethic it takes to be an MEP through Ville's monologue. Ville accentuated the fun of being an MEP but also mentioned the consequences. He said that MEP's pre-covid felt quite frazzled with the amount of travelling they had to do. Even though the experiences of going to different countries is thrilling, it is usally met by hour long meetings. Ville also stated that as an MEP, it is quite important to have your works recognized by other MEP's and this usaully is a quite tedious process.

In addition, we also learned about the work the European Parliament does inside and outside the EU. Ville mentioned that the European Parliament tries to be the voice of Europe. The European Parliament for example decides upon EU legislation and holds other EU institutions to account if there is an infringe of law. Ville also spoke about the power of the European Parliament outside the EU. He mentioned that inherently they have little to no power when it comes to foreign policy of other countries, but when those foreign policies indirectly affect the EU, the European Parliament holds great power.
